Banaso is a farming community near Enchi in the Aowin Municipality in the Western North Region, which is known for illegal mining.
Three teenage girls have been found dead in a galamsey pit.
The girls, whose names were gathered as Ophelia Tawiah, Maaku and Linda Manu, aged 12, 13 and 14 respectively drowned while mining on the site on the evening of Thursday, November 19, 2020.
The incident was reported to the rescue team at Banaso and it’s neighboring community, Achimfo who rushed to the site, but the three bodies were brought up dead.
The youth in the community have since stormed the mining site to destroy equipment belonging to the Chinese who have been said to be mining in the area.
Childrren in the community have been going to the mining site to engage in “dig and wash” in order to gain a daily mark of Ghc30, since school went on break.
