Education has been the focal point of Ghanaian Election since 2008 and definitely it is going to be the focal point of the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in December.
Whilst the New Patriotic Party NPP is vigorously campaigning on the basis and premise that they promised to make Secondary Education Free and they have delivered on it, giving over 1.2 million Ghanaian people access to free quality education they deserve another term.
The National Democratic Congress, NDC, is also campaigning on the fact that they have selected, approved and inaugurated a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast,an Educationist and a former Education Minister of impeccable integrity as the first female Running Mate of a major Political Party in Ghana,so they should be voted back to power.
Since the appointment inauguration of the former Vice Chancellor and former Minister as a Running Mate, she has been on the campaign trail, campaigning tremendously and vigorously for herself and her Presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, for them to be voted for again by the Ghanaian people.
In a conversation with Live FM’s Kwabena Korankye in Cape Coast, she asserted that her intervention in the Colleges of Education gave rise to an increase number of trained teachers in the country especially in basic schools. She said ‘
When I was made the minister of education, we realized that the number of trained teachers were fewer in the system as compared to the basic school pupils. This was due to the quota system which wasn’t allowing the colleges of education to admit up to full capacity”
“So after the colleges gained tertiary status we spoke with GETFUND to provide the students with loans just as being done in the universities and increase the intake in order for us to have more trained teachers to teach in the basic schools. We allowed those already on the allowance to enjoy it till they completed so it’s not true we took it from the beneficiaries”
“In fact, it was my intervention that increased the number of trained teachers annually from 9,000 to 15,400. So the sin I committed was to allow more teachers to be trained so we don’t have shortages going forward? She asked.
